What Happened?
Two huge earthquakes occurred in Mexico, and did a lot of damage to the city of Mexico. Many people have died and were seriously hurt. The first one struck in the Pacific Ocean near Chiapas and Oaxaca. This earthquake happened on September 8,2017. The magnitude of that earthquake was 8.1 which is a lot. The second earthquake happened on land but in the south of Mexico. This earthquake happened on September 19,2017. The magnitude of that earthquake was 7.1 which is still high.
The earthquake mostly affected three places. One of those places was Chiapas. Chiapas officials say that more than 400 houses were destroyed and 1700 were damaged but not destroyed. And in Oaxaca the earthquake killed at least 45 people! There were more people who were killed, but the police haven’t found their bodies yet. Another place that was majorly affected was Mexico City. Long ago Mexico city was built on top of a lake. Since it was built on top of a lake it was less stable, which makes the ground wobbly for the buildings, like being on top of jello. Mexico City is one of the most popular so most people go there so there was majority of people that could been injured or killed. Police are still searching under buildings to search for people's bodies.
Why did it happen?
The earthquake in Mexico was caused when a rock underground broke the fault. This was a bad earthquake it was about 650 kilometers and 30 miles deep. It’s been 32 years since another earthquake which killed thousands of people. And now people are sad, and their hearts are broken. People are fixing the buildings that got damage from the quake. 34 earthquake were bigger than 7 magnitude. Today people all over the world are raising money to help the people affected quake.

You should help because…
- There was at least 240 deaths and many more injured.
- They didn’t know the earthquake was coming so they had no way to prepare.
- It was a 7.1 earthquake and a 8.1 earthquake. The Richter scale only goes up to 10. So, it was a major natural disaster.
- There was two earthquakes so double the damage which means they need more money.
- The death toll for Hurricane Irma was 72, the death toll for Harvey was 82, and the Puerto Rico was 45. So a significant amount of people died in this disaster.
